FOOD HOKITIKA NEW ZEALAND

All about food

If you knew that whatever you ate next would be your last meal, what would you want it to be?

Steak salad

This is a tough one for me as I am a total foodie. I love food – as can be seen by the size of my ever increasing butt as of late. I’ve been asked this question a lot and it used to be a simple answer – steak and salad. Why I don’t know – it was always a meal I really enjoyed when I was younger and something I said that I could eat again and again if stuck on a desert island.

However, in the last 10 years I have tried wonderful food from all over the world, and my tastes have definitely changed. Despite some random stuff at times, there were some amazing gastronomic delights to be had in Korea. Same in New Zealand. I still love steak and salad but I have found a whole new appreciation for a wide variety of things that tantalise my taste buds.

Moules marinière

I have always loved cooking and even entered and got through the first round of NZ Masterchef this year. I unfortunately had to pull out as I got offered a full time job that I really couldn’t turn down, but there is still a little part of me that would have loved to have had a go and see where I got to. I have been invited to be a food judge at this years Hokitika Wild Foods Festival though so looking forward to that – although maybe not the stallion shots or other weird and wonderful things I’ll have to try!

Blue cod with beurre blanc

I would definitely love to do some cooking classes though and learn the art of gourmet cooking and also plating food too. I love watching all the cooking shows and seeing how chefs can make an mini artwork on your plate. I come from a family where we cook enough to feed a small army each meal so it’s hard sometimes to make things look pretty. I do love to cook though and I especially love cooking for other people. The main things I have really been missing recently are the dinner parties I used to have or go to in the UK. Ones where there would be an amazingly dressed table as well as amazing tasting food. I was thinking just the other day that I should actually stop pinning pictures of them onto my Pinterest pin board and actually orgainse one instead.

So anyway got totally off track there – back to the question……….

Apple & Blackberry Crumble with Crème Anglaise

Well I would have to say these days that my last meal would have to be seafood, all kinds of freshly caught seafood. I would start with either moules marinière with cream, garlic and white wine (mariner’s mussels it translates to) or grilled mussels – some with garlic butter, some with cheese, some with bacon, and some with pesto – all on a big plate with some beautiful fresh bread. For main course I would have blue cod and gurnard with garlic butter scallops and a side of salad and kumara chips. For dessert – no not seafood – but my all-time favourite – apple and blackberry crumble with crème anglaise – mmmmmmmmmm. Am salivating just thinking about it all!! Maybe it can be my next birthday meal instead??
