The night that sAntAcon took over the streets of Melbourne……

If you were in Melbourne city centre on Saturday night then you will have seen and heard a hoard of about 120 Santas dancing through the streets of Melbourne. The annual sAntAcon event started in Federation Square where we all picked up an old school boom box which were blaring out some funky dance tunes to get the Santas – and everyone else – in the mood for dancing.

After winding through the lanes of Melbourne, and past city hall, we took over Bourke Street Mall where a huge group of on lookers gathered to watch the Santa dance off. Then came the interesting part of the evening. How many Santas can you fit on a tram? A lot was the answer and with the dancing it proved to be a very rocky and bumpy ride to the first bar of the evening, Amp’d.

After some drinking and more dancing in Amp’d, the Santa hoard headed off to Melbourne Central for some bowling and laser tag. My misspent youth playing laser tag in the UK came in handy and I was the top dog on our team.

By this stage there were a lot of ‘merry’ Santas so we headed across the road and finished the night off dancing on the steps of the State Library of Victoria where we picked up a lot of other ‘merry’ people too!

I was a little apprehensive about heading to this event on my own and wasn’t sure what to expect. However, with in about 2 minutes of being there I had already made friends with a group of Couchsurfing Santas and was set for the rest of the night. The event was really well run and everyone was in fine form and up for a great night. It has definitely got to be one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time and can’t wait till next years.
